Welcome to the Melrose Boy Scout Troop 68
1998 Philmont Photo Gallery #2

In July, 1998, ten members of Troop 68, along with two adult advisors, took part in the council's trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Troop 68 filled one of the three council contingents that went on this adventure.
The following pictures show what the first few days on the trail were like.

On the way out to the drop point our rangers described the ranch.

Racheal, our ranger, explains a few orienteering points as the hike begins.

As we crossed our first stream we discovered why packs should be loose.

We walked by the horse corral at Ponil Camp on our way to Sioux Camp.

Ranger Racheal encouraged the crew to use one pot cooking for their meals.

Our first sunrise on our trek was a site to behold as it peeked over the hillside.

Much of the water we drank came from streams along the way.

This area was burned by lightning. Mt Baldy is seen in the distance.

We rested by a pond on Wilson Mesa just outside of northern Philmont.

Racheal spends one last training session with the crew about emergencies.

The crew watched a demonstration on how to climb spars at Pueblano Camp.

Then it was our turn to try climbing the spars and yell our cheer.

Of course, Philmont is not all sunshine and great weather.

We walked through on area that got hit hard with a wind storm.

We took a moment to rest after arriving at French Henry Camp.

The crew checked out the small gold nugget found at French Henry Camp.

Then the crew tried to find their own gold in the nearby stream.

But try as they may, no one had any luck in finding gold.
