Winter Camping Trip

 JANUARY 25-27, 1984

Thirteen Scouts and two adult leaders spent the weekend at Parker Scout Reservation near Brainerd, Minnesota, for a weekend of fun in the snow. Unfortunately, we don't have many snow pictures so we give you these pictures which where taken inside the administration building in which the troop stayed.

The group picture. It looks a little dark here but the large picture is a bit better after it was touched up a bit.

The only source of heat was the fireplace which let 80% of the heat out the chimney.

The No-Star wrestling match was a favorite activity in the evening hours. Those floor mats came in handy.

District Recognition Banquet
February 7, 1985

During the Scenic District's annual banquet two leaders from Melrose were honored. Joe Timmins, cubmaster of Pack 68, and Steve Borgerding, scoutmaster of Troop 68, were each presented with the district's Scouter of the Year Award. Each leader was there to support the other as he received his award. Neither of them knew that he himself would be receiving it.

As his wife carol smiles, Joe Timmins was quite surprised to receive the Scouter of the Year Award.

Joe Timmins accepts his award from the Scenic District executive and banquet presenter.

Steve Borgerding and Joe Timmins pose with presenter Jim Acres after the ceremony.

Ripley Rendezvous
April 1985

Nearly every year, the Central Minnesota Council, in cooperation with the Camp Ripley National Guard Base, conduct the Ripley Rendezvous, bringing nearly a 1000 Boy Scouts to the camp for fun and competition. It is an event that nearly all Scouts look forward to attending.

Boy Scout troops stay in the camp barracks while attending the Ripley Rendezvous.

Volleyball was one of the tournaments this year. The team from Troop 68 did quite well this year.

One of the best things about the rendezvous is that Scouts can see military equipment up close.

Troop 68 Olympiad Weekend
April 26-28, 1985

Troop 68 held a Scouting Olympiad at Klasen's 40 acres (soon to be know as Camp Watchamagumee to troop members). During the weekend patrols competed in various activities testing their Scouting skills and knowledge.

Before campsites were cleared and the name was Watchamagumee, Scouts camped along the beaver pond.

Although I forget what the name of this contest was, the Scouts found it to be challenging and fun.

Ten members of the troop participated in the weekend's festivities. Is it not a handsome group?  :-)

Bike Trip: Lake Carlos State Park
June 21-23, 1985

This was the first of our weekend bike hikes that were held during the following years. We learned a few things along the way, and had a great time when we arrived. The park is a great place to camp. Stay there next time you are in the Alexandria area.

Getting ready to leave was a project in itself. But the trip was fun, even though we did have one injury along the way.

The beach at Lake Carlos State Park was a very popular place for everyone to hang out and catch a few rays.

Sitting around the campfire is enjoyed by current Boy Scouts and future Scouts yet to come into the ranks.

Summer Camp
July 13-20, 1985

Tomahawk Scout Camp in was the site for this year's week of summer camp. Twenty-one troop members attending camp and had fun canoeing, shooting rifles and arrows, earning merit badges, and a lots more.

A cousin of Pedro the burro attended camp to the surprise and pleasure of the troop members.

The campwide activity had a knightly theme. Here the guys attempt to knock their opponents of the log.

Even a bit of lumber jacking could be found during the camp wide competition.

Emergency Drill
Fall 1985

Each year the Melrose police, fire, and ambulance departments are tested for their skills and readiness when a mock disaster drill is held. This year the drill was held near the fertilizer plant in Melrose. There has been an explosion and a chemical leak! And unfortunately, a group of Boy Scouts happen to be hiking near the plant!  Oh no!!!!

Before the drill took place the Scouts received a bit of make-up to give the appearance of being injured.

The ambulance crew and police arrive on the scene and immediately help the Scouts into the ambulance.

A few of the Scouts had serious "injuries" and had to be taken into the hospital emergency room.
